The scarab was a sacred symbol for the Ancient Egyptians. The particular species of bettle represented in numerous amulets and works of art was commonly the large sacred scarab (Scarabaeus sacer). The action of the scarab dung beetle rolling balls of dung along the ground and depositing them in its burrows was regarded as a representation of the sun and its course through the heavens, rolled by the scarab god Khepri. In many artifacts, the scarab is depicted pushing the sun along its course in the sky.
The scarab beetle became an ancient Egyptian symbol for rebirth, and each day the sun disappeared, always to rise again and be reborn the following day.
