Bodhidharma is the founder of Zen Buddhism (Chinese: 禅/Chan), and credited with Zen's introduction to China during his travels to the Middle Kingdom. He is also referred to as the father of Shaolin martial arts.
The primary aim of Zen Buddhsim is personal enlightenment, and according to Bodhidharma, enlightenment is to be found within the self through meditation, not through books, sutras, or rituals. Bodhidharma taught that within each of us is the Buddha, and that meditation can help us remember our true Buddha nature.
Engraved on this statue is the Heart Sutra, it is a well-known Mahāyāna Buddhist sutra that is very popular among Mahāyāna Buddhists, both for its brevity and depth of meaning. Its Sanskrit name Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya literally translates to the "Heart of the Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom." The Heart Sutra could be said to be the best known and most popular of all Buddhist scriptures.
